Top 10 Things To Consider When You Buy A Cell Phone
There are so many things that cell phones or smart phones do these days that you really should think about your purchase. Gone are the days when your phone is just to make calls. Here are the top 10 things that you need to consider when you are going to purchase your next phone.
1. Bluetooth capability – There are laws in many states now that require hands free use. You need to know what is available for the phones you are looking at. The way this feature works is you connect to the hands free device via low-frequency radio waves for making calls. Many phones also allow the option to exchange or sync data with other devices or connect to stereo headphones to listen to music. This used to be a cool option that has now become a necessity.
2. Contacts list and voice dialing – This is another option that has moved up on the list of priorities. First how many contacts can the device store? Next how many voice numbers or commands are available? This is an option that with the new laws in many states you should take a hard look at.
3. E-mail and messaging – This is an option that has grown in popularity. If you asked the average person, 10 years ago how much they used text messaging they would have said very little if at all. Today there are laws affecting the use of text messaging. You want to evaluate how much you use texting. Do you send pictures with your text messages? Do you prefer a keyboard setup for you texting? Do you send and receive e-mail from you phone? Many phones support instant messaging from services like Yahoo and AOL. If you use this option you should look at an unlimited data plan. The options are numerous so make sure you examine them all.
4. Organizer Applications – You can everything that is in the accessories tab on your desktop and more on your smart phone. Things like a calendar, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a calculator, GPS mapping, tracking your children’s phones the options are endless. This is an area that should not be taken for granted.
5. Web browser – Most smart phones allow you to surf the Internet. This is an option that is very useful if you are one the go and need internet access. Many can even be used as a modem to connect your desktop or laptop computer to the Internet. Make sure if you are planning to use this option you look at the unlimited data or unlimited Internet access plans available. There may also be some special cable that you will need to purchase.
6. Camera and video recorder – This is an option that is taking the camera and video world by storm. The cameras and video recorders in many phones today are as or more powerful than ones you purchase separately. This is something that can actually create a net savings for you with a little research and planning. This can replace the purchase of a camera and video recorder.
7. Push to talk – This allows you phone to act as a walkie-talkie so that you can immediately connect with individuals or call groups. This is a great option for business owners. It also provides the advantage of not using your cell minutes for this form of communication.
8. Speakerphone and conference calling – This is useful for hands free driving and setting up impromptu meetings. A great option for business users.
9. Multimedia and memory options – Some features to look for include a digital music player, support for MP3 files, and an FM radio. Also, many phones now support streaming video through 3G wireless broadband networks, live TV, and wireless music downloads. Check out the carrier reviews for AT&T, Sprint Nextel, and Verizon Wireless for a complete list. There will be an extra fee, of course, and you’ll need 3G service in your area. For the best experience with a multimedia phone, make sure your phone has plenty of storage space (an external memory card slot is best), and consider whether you want dedicated music controls on the exterior of the phone.
10. Personalization options – Some phones come in multiple colors or allow for changeable faceplates. Accessories such as Bluetooth headsets, speakers, or SIM card readers also are available, but make sure it’s specifically designed for your phone of choice. Most models offer a variety of customization options as well. These can include a choice of display wallpaper, screen savers, and ring tones. If personalizing your phone is important to you, make sure you have a lot of options before buying a particular model. Handsets will also differ on their support for extra applications. Though every cell phone supports games not every model comes with integrated titles. In that case, you’ll have to buy them for a few dollars a pop, and your selection will change by carrier. Extra applications are available depending on your phone model and your carrier. For example, Sprint offers a wireless backup service to save your contacts, while Verizon Wireless has a GPS application called VZ Navigator.

What is the device called which, wirelessly allows internet access through a satellite link?
I’m told there’s a device which can connect to a satellite, be connected to a computer, and the computer received an internet connection from the satellite. I’m not talking about hooking it to a cellphone or wifi. I’m talking about a device which would work like a satellite connection for your computer to allow internet access most everywhere you go. Even stuck in a boat in the middle of the atlantic you’d be able to connect to the internet with this device. What is it called?
It is likely an Inmarsat transciever. Probably not cheap or fast.

In the WILDERNESS: Collecting Rainwater and Wireless Internet (HD)
Internet access is very useful whilst camping in the wilderness. Weather forecasts, maps, identifying the species of snake that has bitten someone, etc.
Some essentials for a similar setup in order of cost are -
Laptop with reasonably low power consumption – less than 45 Watt (3.7A at 12V) when hard disk + CPU near idle and no USB active. For example, my Dell studio 17 laptop can be configured to use as little as 3A while surfing the internet. Reducing the number of operating system services running helps, Windows 7 users should go here – http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm
Solar panels – minimum 80 watt. (200W in this video)
Pure sine wave inverter.
True deep cycle battery – minimum 80 amp hour – (40 Amp hour effective capacity).
Solar charge regulator – preferably a Pulse Width Modulation type (PWM)
Biquad antenna.
Cables and plugs.
Multimeter.
Battery hydrometer – a good way to measure state of charge
A basic understanding of electron flow and electrical circuits – Voltage, current, resistance, series and parallel circuits.
A decent understanding of how batteries work and how not to destroy them.
