Next Generation All-IP Telecom Networks: Quality of Service Challenges and Is…

Google Tech Talks
January, 14 2008

ABSTRACT

The SIP-based IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), while recently introduced, has become one of the primary distinguishing features of the next generation of mobile telecommunication systems. IMS allows mobile operators to offer advanced value-added services – like VoIP, so-called push-to-media, video, interactive gaming, and mobile banking – to their customers timely and efficiently. Google’s plans to enter the wireless world open up a world of possibilities for offering customers and businesses advanced services such as targeted location-based services and advertisements through the IMS framework.

Deploying IMS, however, is a non-trivial task. The core challenge for the telecom industry has been and will be the integration of the current radio access network (RAN) and IP transport infrastructure with the IMS domain. Within standardization bodies, efforts are underway to address the issues for call setup and mobility signaling, while developing unified user profile management and Quality of Service (QoS) architectures. The real goal is a standardized, IMS-centric, end-to-end unified signaling architecture.

To this end, this presentation provides an overview of IMS and QoS signaling over integrated RAN and IMS domains. By using an exemplary family media service, aspects and specifics of the end-to-end QoS invocation, control and policy enforcement, including roaming scenarios, are demonstrated. Based on laboratory measurements performed at Sprint-Nextel aided with simulations, the Post Dial Delay (PDD) delay is evaluated and some practical recommendations for delay reduction are presented. The presentation will conclude with discussion of open issues and viable solutions. This presentation should be of interest to Googlers who work on mobile related projects and intend to have a big picture of next generation mobile systems such as application development, and service and system integration with wireless operators.

This presentation is based on the article S. Zaghloul, A. Jukan, W. Alanqar: "Extending QoS from Radio Access to all-IP Core in 3G Networks – An Operator’s Perspective," IEEE Communications Magazine, Sept 2007.

Getting Broadband Connected In And Going Wireless With VoIP

Here are ten easy steps for going wireless with VoIP.

You will need an updated computer.

First you will need to have an upgraded computer that is compatible with VoIP software. When you are comparing and choosing service providers, take special note to see if they run their programs on Windows, Linux, or MAC OS.

If you use Mac or Linux, don’t assume that all VoIP providers will have your needs in mind. Technology advances everyday, and this includes processor speeds, hardware, motherboards, memory, and video and graphic cards.

If you have a “dinosaur” of a computer, there is little chance that VoIP will work with your outdated system. You can check with the company’s requirements regarding their standards for your computer.

You must have High Speed Internet access such as DSL, or Cable

It is required that you have High Speed Internet before purchasing VoIP services. There are a handful of companies that will work with dial up connections, but the standard choice is High Speed Internet.

High Speed Internet connections allow for the bandwidth needed as well as produce a higher quality audio sound. When it comes to transmitting data, audio, and video files, nothing beats High Speed.

You will soon discover the benefits to having a High-speed Internet connection, and then you will ask your self why you didn’t go with them sooner.

Evaluate your Needs

You must decide why you want to switch to VoIP. A good idea is to make a list and write down your reasons for wanting VoIP over PSTN landline phones.

If you are a residential homeowner and are fed up with paying high fees for local and long distance, then by all means, write that down.

If you are looking for small business solutions and want to incorporate all of your data, audio, and video needs, then add that to your list. By composing a list, you can clearly see what your needs are and what service is best suited for you.

Choose between Residential, Business, or both

Many people opt to keep their business needs on PSTN, while testing VoIP in their residences. Not soon afterwards, they come to realize the potential benefits for their businesses as well.

If you have a home office, some service providers will have a plan based on your needs as well. Some of the differences between residential and business plans include faxing and email capabilities, more long distance on “basic” and not “unlimited” plans, and some companies even throw in amenities such as free yellow book advertising.

Again, writing a list down of what you want in a VoIP service will help you better determine what your telecommunication needs are.

Compare Service Providers

Now it is time to compare various service providers. There are many sites on the Internet that will let you review and compare different plans.

Also, word of mouth is always a great form of advertising. If you have friends and relatives who have switched to VoIP, find out from them how they like their service provider, and also inquire about any providers that they may have had a negative experience with.

Select the plan that is Right for You

Now that your list is complete and you have compared service plans, it is time to decide on a service provider. Choose the provider that you feel best meets your needs stated on your list.

You will also have the choice of purchasing monthly or yearly contracts, so know which option is best for you ahead of time.

Purchase an Adapter for your telephones if your Service does not provide you with one

If you don’t want to sit at your computer for every phone call, you will need a phone adapter.

This adapter will allow you to use your household phones to take VoIP calls. Some providers include an adapter with their services- others may not. Make sure you find out if you will need to purchase an adapter.

Choose your Area Code and Phone Number

Many providers will give you the opportunity of selecting your own area code and phone number. This is great for those who have family and friends in a specific area, and who would like to save them money on their long distance bills.

It is also an effective marketing tool for businesses that are targeting a specific region.

Configure your Phone’s features

Your phone will come with a variety of features. You may configure them through an Internet control panel. This allows greater freedom to many.

You will typically set up your voicemail, call block numbers, and other features the same as you would on your cell phone.

Spread the Word

Now that you are enjoying your new VoIP service, spread the word and let others know how they too can save money.

Predictable Low Monthly Bills With Comcast Bundled Services

Now you can say goodbye to your monthly bill surprises forever with Comcast’s bundled service plan that lets you know exactly what your total telecommunications expenses are going to be each and every month. There are great savings and convenience with Comcast, because all the latest technology they have implemented during their recent total upgrade of their entire network infrastructure allows for complete efficiency in their service.

Everyone recognizes the Comcast name for their long standing reputation as one of the leading names in TV programming and Comcast has now brought their reputation with them into the business of providing digital phone service along with state of the art broadband high speed cable internet service.

Broadband high speed is a full one hundred times faster than standard dial up service and six times faster than DSL and this new speed allows you to travel further and faster through the internet no matter what you are interested in doing on it. Comcast provides everything you need to get fully connected and this includes the cable modem as well as the wireless router that will make the internet accessible from anywhere in, or outside of your home.

Any websites, or points of interest that you visit on the net pop up instantly with the click of your mouse with speed that is this fast and for online group competition video games, cable high speed is the only way to go, because satellite high speed has a slight lag time created by the signal traveling to and then from the satellite.

Up until now phone service providers charged for everything that you did on your phone and keeping your phone bills down was a difficult thing to do, but now Comcast has changed all of that with heir flat rate phone system. It’s entirely digital and because of that fact it’s far more efficient and this translates into savings for you the customer.

You get free long distance calling anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, all the way up and through Alaska, so that does away with long distance charges that have been bleeding you financially for all of these years. You also get all of your standard phone convenience free of charge as well with Comcast. There are twelve of them in total and they include an all new voice mail with an extra large capacity, caller ID, call waiting and call forwarding just to name a few of them.

Comcast is still the leader in TV programming and in fact their recent upgrade has brought some major changes to their Cable TV service. They now feature two-hundred and seventy-five channels of programming and forty channels of music programming and the music channels are free in their TV programming packages.

Only cable can bring you on demand pay per view and what other service providers fail to understand is that people are spontaneous and they need to have their pay per view to be on demand, so they don’t have to wait hours for a movie that they have ordered. Comcast now has two on demand pay per view options and one is their original on demand pay per view while the other is their all new Premiums On Demand pay per view.

With Comcast bundled services you only receive one simple and easy to understand bill that covers all of your services with only one fee that you pay each month. All of your services are also covered by one toll free customer service number that you can call any time day or night if you need to talk to a Comcast representative also.

The Future of Wireless Networking

When it comes to networking, the future is wireless. As the technology develops and transfer speeds increase, it looks increasingly likely that wireless will replace Ethernet in most home and small business networks. In this article, I look at how far wireless networking has come and at what the future holds.

There is little doubt that wireless is the way of the future. In fact, it has already made its way into many homes and businesses. If you own a laptop with wireless capabilities, you already know all the handy wireless hotspots in your local area. While you still have to pay for some of these services, increasingly business like cafes and restaurants are offering free Wi-Fi to attract customers.

Wireless is also becoming the medium of choice for the average home network. Most if not all internet service providers (ISPs) offer wireless routers with their packages for a few extra dollars. Also, you will be hard pushed to find a desktop or laptop computer manufactured in the last couple of years that does not have wireless capabilities. So, wireless is both cheap and easy to set up in the home.

The same is true for small businesses. The average wireless router’s signal will cover enough area for most small offices. Wireless networking also cuts out the cost of installing and maintaining Ethernet cables. And, of course, it is much neater.

Why am I getting calls from someone claiming to be "Verizon Wireless Financial Services"?

I know this isn’t the real Financial Services because we pay our bills on time and I’m added onto the account, I’m not the main account… so they have absolutely NO reason to call me.
This number has called me day and night about 4-6 times a day. This started since last week.
Are the calls going to stop on their own or am I going to have to take this up with someone?
I reverse phonebooked the number for free.
It’s a landline phone in Irvine, California.

Call the REAL Verizon back from your Verizon phone… 611? Give them caller ID that showed up before. They may have something to say.
